CIBA signed MoU with the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi for development of brackishwater aquaculture in Kerala State – 15th March 2015

In Kerala, brackishwater resources cover an area of around 1,43,696 hectares, along with adjacent low-lying fields and mangrove swamps. In an effort to utilise this huge potential of brackishwater aquaculture resources in the Kerala State, Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi, for conducting joint research for development of a sustainable model of brackishwater aquaculture. As per the agreement, technical assistance will be extended by CIBA for undertaking research and development programmes on diversified brackishwater farming practices in the State in partnership with KUFOS.
Apart from initiating knowledge partnership for research with KUFOS, CIBA will also join hands to train farmers and develop/refine technologies for brackishwater farming practices suitable to the State, for example, developing a sustainable vannamei farming model suitable for Kerala. Dr V. M. Victor George, Registrar, KUFOS and Dr K. K. Vijayan, Director, CIBA exchanged copies of the MoU at the Fisheries Research Station on Puthuvypu Island on 15th March 2015. The programme was witnessed by Hon’ble. Shri. K. Babu, Fisheries Minister, Kerala, Shri. S. Sharma, MLA and Ms.Leena Nair. IAS, Chairperson, MPEDA, Kochi.
