CIBA has published a booklet on Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) pertaining to Penaeus vannamei shrimp farming along with answers for the benefit of field level extension workers and farmers . It consisted of 112 FAQs collected from the farmers across the coastal states along with answers. It contains FAQs on pond preparation, seed selection and stocking, feeds and feed management, soil and water quality management, health management, on regulatory measures, food safety and record keeping. Extent of pond drying between two cultures, measures need to be taken to disinfect the pond bottom in case of non-drainable ponds, need for scraping and ploughing of pond bottom, deciding disinfection, efficiency of minerals and disinfection, disinfection of ground water, application of fermented juice and molasses, C: N ratio and its significance in P.vannamei shrimp farming, biofloc and its significance, aging of pond water and pond design changes are covered in pond preparation. SPF P.vannamei shrimp, longevity of SPF status, seed quality parameters, nursery rearing in vannamei and reasons for low seed survival in vannamei ponds are the FAQs covered in seed selection and stocking. Feed quality parameters, physical evaluation, water stability of the feed, advantage of using high protein feed initially, feed rationing and timings, issues in night feeding, check tray monitoring, size variation and feed management, aspects to be kept in mind while adopting the feed dispenser, mixing probiotics/supplements, conversion of nutrients in to biomass, using different brands of feeds in a single culture and application of farm-made feed for P.vannamei shrimp are the areas covered in feed management. In water quality management, ionized and unionized forms of ammonia and their significance, application of probiotics and minerals for phytoplankton development, lime materials and their significance, DO, pH fluctuations, optimum water quality parameters, application of minerals in P.vannamei farming, dosage and frequency of minerals application during culture, duration of aeration required for P.vannamei shrimp at different DoCs, type of aerators, position the aerators for better performance, total alkalinity and hardness, micro nutrients for vannamei shrimp, growth monitoring in P.vannamei, osmo-ionic regulation in vannamei, water soluble and insoluble forms of minerals, mineral content of source waters, important roles of minerals in P.vannamei farming, mineral composition and salinity, pond age and water quality, metabolites and pond bottom, symptoms indicate mineral deficiency, turbidity in pond waters, pH, temperature and minerals, feeds and mineral nutrients, aeration and ammonia management, accuracy of water quality kits and management measures required to keep the pond bottom hygiene are covered. In health management, PCR screening protocols for diseases affecting L.vannamei, morphological features to assess the health of vannamei shrimp at farmer level, running mortality, diseases reported in L.vannamei farming in India, their causes and management, white muscle formation in L.vannamei, green and yellow colonies of Vibrio, Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS/AHPND) and its symptoms, Running mortality syndrome(RMS), running mortality and water quality, EHP and measures to be undertaken to prevent it, immunostimulants, and partial harvesting in vannamei farming are the major aspects covered. Regulation of P.vannamei farming in inland areas, crop holiday, do’s and don’t’s of a farmer, food safety measures, record maintenance, procedure obtaining registration from the CAA, culture of vannamei shrimp in tide fed farms, insurance and schemes available for P.vannamei farming are covered under regulatory guidelines section.
