Director's message

Dr. K.K. Vijayan

It is my great pleasure and privilege to take the charge of the Director, Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), at this time when brackishwater aquaculture in India is showcased impressive performance with a farmed shrimp production of ~ 3.4 lakh tones with diversification of species such as Litopenaeus vannamei. Diversification of species with other shell fishes and fin fishes, Indian white shrimp, seabass, Chanos and mullets and brackishwater oysters, has become more relevant and challenging at this juncture owing to the problems of emerging diseases, environmental and trade issues. CIBA has been working with a mandate to meet the needs of Indian coastal aquaculture through technological backstopping to support the growth of the sector in an economically viable, socially acceptable and environmentally sustainable mode. CIBA will shoulder the responsibility of basic and strategic research requirements of brackishwater aquaculture sector. At this time when India celebrated 68th Independence day looking forward in an environment of new aspiration and change, we will move forward fostering positive relations with stakeholders of coastal aquaculture, small scale and large scale farmers, allied industries, state and central government institutions, NGOs and relevant international organizations. CIBA will take the responsibility and leadership to achieve the above set short term and long term objectives.
