Awards and recognitions

  • Dr. A. Panigrahi, Senior Scientist, was awarded the Best Young Scientist Award for the year 2008-09 by the Dr Hiralal Chaudhuri Fisheries Foundation,Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai on 10 July 2009.
  • Drs.  B.Shanthi,  K.Ambasankar,  C.P.Balasubramanian  and  S.Kannappan,  Senior  Scintists  and  Drs.  V.S.Chandrasekaran  and  M.Krishnan,  Principal  Scientists  received  an  appreciation  letter  from Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary DARE and Director General, ICAR for exemplary work done under the DBT Funded Project ‘Diversification of livelihoods among Women SHGs   through coastal aquaculture technologies’ undertaken in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts of  Tamil Nadu.
  • Dr. B.Shanthi, Senior Scientist  was recognized and appreciated with a 'Shield'  by ‘SIGA’, NGO and Coastal Women Self Help Group of Tiruvallur District,   Tamil Nadu during a function conducted on the occasion of Women’s Day Celebration. on 27 March 2010 at Pulicat for the efforts taken in empowering the coastal women Self Help Group.
  • Dr.T.Ravisankar, Senior Scientist received  an ICAR Team Award from Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary DARE and Director General, ICAR for  the work on 'Exploring market opportunities for fisheries sector in India'.
  • Dr.Arasu and his team received an appreciation letter from the  Deputy Director General (Fisheries), ICAR for the achievement of year round breeding of Asian Seabass under controlled conditions.
  • Mr. C.P. Binesh, Senior Research Fellow received Best paper award for presentation of paper titled ‘Persistent betanodavirus infection in fishes: Concerns in Indian coastal aquaculture’ in Golden Jubilee National Seminar on ‘Diversification of Aquaculture through Locally Available Fish species (DALAF-2010)’ held by Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kolkata Centre, Aug. 27-28th, 2010.
  • The paper “Studies on the reproductive biology of black king fish Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) in the coastal waters around Chennai” by S.Elangeshwaran, A.R.T.Arasu, S.Venu, M.Kailasam, Prem Kumar, R.Subburaj and G.Thiagarajan was adjudged as the best in the National conference on New Vistas in Indian Aquaculture held during 23-24 February 2012 at Chennai.
  • S. Rajesh, Ms. J. Kiruthika and M.S. Shekhar received the Best poster award for their poster “Isolation, identification and expression analysis of fatty acid binding protein (FABP) gene in Penaeus monodon shrimp in response to high salinity stress” in the National conference on New Vistas in Indian Aquaculture held during 23-24 February 2012 at Chennai.
  • Ms. J. Kiruthika, S. Rajesh, A.G. Ponniah and M.S. Shekhar, received the Best Paper award for “Suppression subtractive hybridization reveals differential gene expression in shrimp Penaeus monodon induced to low salinity stress” in the National conference on New Vistas in Indian Aquaculture held during 23-24 February 2012 at Chennai.
  • P.K.Patil, C.Gopal, H.Solanki, M.Muralidhar, J.Bhatt and S.M.Pillai were awarded the Best Poster Award for their poster “Effect of formalin killed Vibrio anguillarum administration on immunity and resistance to Vibrio harveyi in pond reared banana shrimp Fenneropenaeus merguiensis” in the National conference on New Vistas in Indian Aquaculture held during 23-24 February 2012 at Chennai.
  • Best paper award was presented toKrishna Sukumaran, A. R. Thirunavukkarasu, M. Natarajan, M.Kailasam, J.K.Sundaray, Prem Kumar, R.Subburaj, G.Thiagarajan and S. Venu in the National Seminar on Emerging trends in Indian Aquaculture during 30-31st August, 2012.
  • Dr. K. Ambasankar was awarded the Best paper award for the best research paper entitled “CIBA’s initiative in small-scale feed production technology for production of farm-made feeds” presented in the National Seminar in Hindi at Kakdwip Research Centre on “Traditional Aqua farming System: Prospects and Challenges” during 11-12th December, 2012.
  • Dr. Debasis De received the Best paper award for “Effect of lecithin on Mugil cephalus under low saline regime” in the National seminar in Hindi on “Traditional Aqua farming system: Prospects and Challenges” at KRC during 11-12th December, 2012.
  • Dr. T.K. Ghoshal received the Best poster award in the National seminar in Hindi on “Traditional Aqua farming system: Prospects and Challenges” at KRC during 11-12th December, 2012.
  • Best Oral presentation award was presented to Prem Kumar, A. R. Thirunavukkarasu, M.Kailasam, J.K.Sundaray, R.Subburaj, G.Thiagarajan for “Importance of nursery rearing in seabass farming” in the National seminar in Hindi on “Traditional Aqua Farming System: Prospect and Challenges” at KRC during 11-12th December, 2012.
  • Best paper award for the research work -Challenging of crude marine algae extract against bio-luminescence disease causing V.harveyi during Penaeus monodon larviculture- was presented to K.Sivakumar, S.Kannappan and P.K. Patil in the National Seminar on Emerging Trends in Indian Aquaculture (ETIA-DHMOP-2013) conducted by Deparment of Aquatic Biology & Fisheries, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram during 28- 30th March 2013.
  • Received Best Stall Display Award under the category of Government stall in Tamil Nadu Fish Festival- TANFIS 2013 on 12th May 2013 at Island Grounds, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • Annai and Anichamalar Women Self Help Groups (beneficiaries of CIBA) received Best Women Self Help Group Stall Display Award on 12th May 2013 at Island Grounds, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
  • Dr.Mahalakshmi , Scientist (SS) & OIC AKMU  received Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Agricultural and Allied Sciences 2012 on 16th July 2013 at NASC Complex, DPSM, New Delhi.
  • Dr.Krishna Sukumaran received best presentation award for her lecture on Efficacy of isoeugenol as an anaesthetic for handling and simulated live transport of pearlspot Etroplus suratensis (Bloch) at the International seminar on Advances in Aquaculture Technologies, Dept. of Zoology, All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, 18-19th July 2013.

  • SOFT(I) Best Scientific Paper Award 2012 was presented to P.Mahalakshmi and M.Krishnan for the research paper -Development and Evaluation of an e-Learning Module for Aquaculture Development through ICT Projects: ADDIE Model- published in Fishery Technology Journal 49 (1) on 27th August 2013 at Central Institute of Fishery Technology, Kochi.
  • Dr.Krishna Sukumaran received best paper award for -Pre-growout culture of Asian seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch) in low volume cage in brackishwater Ashtamudi lake under participatory mode with traditional fisherman authored by Krishna Sukumaran, A. R. Thirunavukkarasu, M. Kailasam, Prem Kumar, R. Subburaj and G. Thiagarajan in the International Conference on Ecosystem Conservation, Climate Change and Sustainable Development (ECOCASD 2013) Theme- Aquaculture and Food Security at the Department of Aquatic Biology, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, 3-5th October, 2013.
  • Best poster award given to J. Kiruthika, S.Rajesh and M.S.Shekhar for the poster presentation on Potential role of differentially expressed glutamine synthetase gene in shrimp salinity stress tolerance and adaptation in the National seminar on Aquatic Toxicology, Biodiversity and Aquaculture during 15-17th November, 2013 at AcharyaNagarjunaUniversity, Guntur
  • CIBA feed mill has been certified for production of organic feed by INDOCERT for a period of one year from 18th December 2013 to 17th December, 2014 and the certificate was received by Dr. A.G. Ponniah, Director, CIBA, Chennai
  • Dr. P.S.Shyne Anand received Prof. P. Kameswara Rao Award for best oral presentation for Comparative performance of monosex and mixed sex culture of green mudcrab Scylla serrata in Sundarban ecosystem during the winter months in International Conference Probing Bioscience For Food Security and Enviornmental Safety at Central Rice Research Institute , Cuttack during16-18th February, 2014.

Ph.D. Programme 

  • Ms.M.Meenakshi was awarded Ph.D from Madras University on 12 January 2010 for the thesis ‘Growth and reproductive physiology of wild and domesticated banana shrimp,  Fenneropenaeus  merguiensis, (Deman,1888)’  under  the  supervision  of Dr. S. M.Pillai, Principal Scientist.
  • Ms. M. Sanjuktha, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D degree on 3rd November, 2010 for her thesis entitled “Investigation on the RNA interference in white spot syndrome virus multiplication in Penaeus monodon (Fabricius 1798) by the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr.T.C.Santiago, Principal Scientist & Scientist-in-Charge, Aquatic Animal Health & Environment Division.
  • Mr. P.Stalin, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D. degree on 4th May 2011 for his thesis entitled “Studies on the development of digestive system in larval stages of Asian seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch 1790)” by the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr.M.Kailasam, Senior Scientist, Fish Culture Division.
  • Mr. K.Aravindan, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D degree on 7th June, 2011 for his thesis entitled “Molecular cloning, expression and immunological characterization of Penaeus monodon allergenic proteins” by the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr.T.C.Santiago. Principal Scientist, CIBA.
  • Mr. N.Chakravarthy, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D degree on 27th June, 2011 for his thesis entitled “Identification, cloning, expression and characterization of CuZnSOD from Asian seabass Lates calcarifer (Block 1790) and its effect on Vibrio anguillarum infection” by the University of Madras under the guidance of, Dr.N.Kalaimani. Principal Scientist, CIBA.
  • Mr. T.D.Babu, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D degree on 14th July, 2011 for his thesis entitled “Investigations on loose shell syndrome in black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius, 1798) in India: Putative aetiological agent” by the University of Madras under the guidance of, Dr.S.V.Alavandi Senior Scientist, CIBA.
  • Mr. S. Raja, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D. degree on 9th August 2011 for his thesis entitled “Studies on adoption and efficiency of standard operating procedures in seed production of tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon (Fabricius, 1798) by the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr. M. Kumaran, Senior Scientist, Social Sciences Division.
  • Mr. V. Rajaram, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D. degree on 8th September 2011 for his thesis entitled “Studies on the utilization of plant protein sources in the diet of black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon with emphasis on protein metabolism by the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr. S. A. Ali, Principal Scientist (Retd.) CIBA.
  • Mr. Gusheinzed Waikhom, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D. degree on 5th January 2012 for his thesis entitled “Reproductive performance and genetic diversity of different stocks of wild and captive reared banana shrimp Fenneropenaeus merguiensis (De Man 1888)” by the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr. S. M. Pillai, Principal Scientist, Crustacean Culture Division.
  • Mr. Abey Varampath Abraham, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D degree on 5th March, 2012 for his thesis entitled “Studies on heavy metal ingress and removal in shrimp farming environment” by the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr. M. Muralidhar, Senior Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge, Environment Group, CIBA.
  • Mr. E.C.Abhilash, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D degree on 18th June, 2012 for his thesis entitled “Bacteria of public health importance in farmed shrimp and marketed seafood with special reference to Vibrio vulnificus” by the University of Madras under the guidance of, Dr.S.V.Alavandi Senior Scientist, CIBA.
  • Dr.M.Alagappan, Research Scholar was awarded Ph.D. by the University of Madras with effect from 19th June 2012 for his thesis entitled “Studies on designing and evaluation of an expert system on shrimp aquaculture and its effectiveness in knowledge dissemination” under the guidance of Dr.M.Kumaran, Senior Scientist, Social Sciences Division.
