Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a major concern for the entire world population and the gravity is expected to be further aggravated in future. There is an urgent need to create awareness on the appropriate use of antimicrobials in order to have a control on it. Aquafarmers need to be a part of the program towards achieving the goal of AMR control. In this regard, ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai conducted a sensitization programme regarding adverse impact of AMR and the future course of action in mitigating the same at Vettavalam, Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu on 4th November 2026. About 100 aqua farmers (86 male and 14 female) from Villipuram, Thiruvannamalai districts in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry UT attended this programme. The programme was conducted under the ICAR funded “All India Network Project on Antimicrobial Resistance (AINP-AMR) in Fisheries and Livestock”. During the meeting, scientists from ICAR-CIBA sensitized the farmers about the present situation of AMR at the national and global levels and different ways to have a control on the misuse of antimicrobials. The farmers were requested to spread the message to fellow farmers and help in making the world safe from the adverse impact of antimicrobials. Information on general aquaculture practices, health management and soil and water management were also discussed with the aquafarmers.
